Alabama I-59 and I-20 Bridge
Project Overview
Lindamood executed this high-profile crane picking demolition, which spanned the entire central businesses district (CBD) of Downtown Birmingham, with critical path road openings, dust mitigation and coordination with multiple agencies and railroad. This project included precision and high reach operations, that were successfully performed by in-house equipment and personnel to meet critical roadway and rail openings.
The project entailed the demolition of two miles of bridge through Downtown Birmingham. It had an extremely aggressive schedule of 60 calendar days because the main thoroughfare through Birmingham was being shut down for reconstruction. To meet the schedule requirements, Lindamood spent an extensive amount of time planning the project, choosing multiple methods of demolition for the bridge.
The process prioritized the safety of staff on site and all bystanders, and secondarily the schedule. Because of that, portions of the bridge were demolished conventionally, while others were saw-cut and crane picked down. Finally, one fly-over portion of the bridge was imploded to limit the amount of time the main detour was closed. The Lindamood team was not only able to meet the tight schedule but beat it by more than two weeks, completing the demolition of the bridges in 45 days.
