Alabama I-59 and I-20 Bridge

Project Overview

Lindamood executed high-profile bridge demolition spanning the entire central business district of Downtown Birmingham under an aggressive 60-day roadway closure. The project required demolition of two miles of bridge structure while maintaining coordination with the Alabama Department of Transportation, rail operators, and multiple municipal agencies.

Given the critical path nature of the main thoroughfare shutdown, the team developed a multi-method demolition strategy to accelerate production while maintaining strict safety controls.

Key project elements included:

  • Demolition of two miles of bridge through downtown Birmingham

  • 60-calendar-day schedule tied to full interstate shutdown

  • Precision saw-cutting and crane picking operations

  • Conventional demolition and high-reach methods

  • Controlled implosion of a flyover section to reduce detour duration

  • Coordination with rail and multiple governing agencies

Safety remained the top priority throughout execution. Through disciplined planning and method selection, the team completed demolition in 45 days — more than two weeks ahead of schedule — enabling early progression of reconstruction activities.
